NY Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock opted for off-season should surgery

The New York Islanders received some clarity regarding veteran defenseman Ryan Pulock heading into the offseason, as the blueliner reportedly underwent shoulder surgery after the season concluded. According to an Islanders spokesman, Pulock is expected to be fully ready for training camp despite the procedure.

The decision came after uncertainty surrounding whether surgery would ultimately be necessary. Speaking during breakup day interviews, Pulock acknowledged he had been battling the shoulder injury “throughout the year,” helping explain some of the struggles he endured late in the season.

While the exact details of the surgery have not been disclosed, it became increasingly apparent down the stretch that Pulock was not operating at full strength. In addition to the shoulder issue, he was also dealing with a knee injury that is reportedly expected to heal naturally without surgical intervention.

“For me, it was a bit of a grind at times,” Pulock admitted following the season. “Trying to compete every night. Had to play through some things.”

The 31-year-old defenseman remained in the lineup despite the injuries, continuing to take on difficult defensive assignments and heavy minutes. However, his mobility and overall effectiveness appeared impacted during the final weeks of the campaign as the Islanders fought to remain in the playoff race.

Pulock stopped short of using injuries as an excuse for his play, adding, “I’m not gonna sit here and make excuses. I think either way, I wish I could have been better, especially down the stretch.”

A healthy Pulock is a major part of the Islanders’ defensive structure moving forward. Known for his shutdown ability, physicality, and heavy shot, he remains one of the team’s most relied upon defenders when fully healthy.

The encouraging part for the Islanders is timing. By undergoing the procedure immediately after the season, Pulock should have the full offseason to recover and prepare for what the organization hopes will be a bounce-back year in 2026-27.
