The New York Islanders continued their strong stretch Tuesday night with an impressive 3–1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena, powered by special teams and another standout performance from Ilya Sorokin.

The Islanders set the tone early with two power-play goals in the opening period and never looked back, improving to 4–1 in their last five games.

The night carried extra meaning for several Islanders players, including rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer. The Hamilton, Ontario native was playing his first NHL game in Toronto and recorded an assist in front of a large group of family and friends in attendance.

Newly acquired center Brayden Schenn also enjoyed a milestone moment. Just five games after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues, Schenn scored his first goal as an Islander to open the scoring.

The goal came at 4:15 of the first period when rookie forward Calum Ritchie spun a slick no-look backhand pass to Schenn near the right hash marks. Schenn buried the chance on the power play to give New York a 1–0 lead.

Ritchie then added a goal of his own just minutes later. Taking a pass from Mathew Barzal at the side of the net, the Oakville native spun toward the crease and jammed home his rebound to double the Islanders’ lead at 9:43.

“It's huge,” Ritchie said of the team’s clinical win. “We haven't been playing necessarily full 60 minute games. I'd say that's been something that we wanted to work on. I felt like tonight was a 60 minute effort.”

Toronto pushed back early in the second period when Steven Lorentz scored to cut the deficit to 2–1, but the Islanders quickly regained control.

Emil Heineman restored the two-goal cushion midway through the period, ripping a one-timer from the right circle off a feed from Tony DeAngelo to make it 3–1.

Sorokin handled the rest, finishing with 26 saves as the Islanders killed all three Toronto power plays while converting twice on six opportunities with the man advantage.
