Tony DeAngelo delivered the game-winning moment just 33 seconds into overtime, leading the New York Islanders to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night. The win marked the Islanders’ seventh straight, as they continue to win games improbably.
DeAngelo wasted no time in the extra frame, converting on a breakaway off a pass from behind the net from Bo Horvat to secure the victory. "I was trying to skate and I had [Brayden] Point coming at me," said Horvat. "He's a fast player so I used the net as protection and everybody was screaming behind me, so I took a quick look up and fired it as hard as I could. Tony did the rest."
Kyle Palmieri and Adam Boqvist, making his Islanders debut, also found the back of the net, while Ilya Sorokin stood tall with 28 saves. "Obviously it's a lot in my head, I got in at 1:30 in the morning," Boqvist said. "Crazy day, but when you step on that ice you don't want to think too much, you just want to go out, win your battles and play for the team."
Tampa Bay forced overtime with a late equalizer from Nikita Kucherov, who buried the tying goal with just 46.1 seconds remaining in regulation. Jake Guentzel also scored for the Lightning, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 33 saves. We got a point, obviously it's huge to get that at the end, but I don't think we had our best," said Guentzel. "Sometimes that's going to happen. You can't get frustrated, keep putting pucks on it and hopefully they'll go in."
The scoring opened in the second period when Guentzel redirected an Erik Cernak shot past Sorokin at 5:39. However, Boqvist responded late in the frame, capitalizing on a rebound after Mathew Barzal’s breakaway attempt was stopped by Vasilevskiy at 18:16. Palmieri, who turned 33 on Saturday, gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead early in the third with his second goal in as many games after going 14 straight without a goal.
Barzal and Scott Mayfield both left the game and did not return. Barzal blocked a shot off his knee in the final minutes, while Mayfield hit the boards awkwardly in the second period. Patrick Roy had no update on either after the game. The Isles play in Florida against the Panthers on Sunday night.
