Sometimes, a coach’s challenge doesn’t require a seat in the press box. Sometimes, it’s a conversation in the morning and a response that night.

Anthony Duclair gave Pete DeBoer the response he wanted Thursday, scoring his first goal of the season in the New York Islanders’ 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. But listening to DeBoer afterward, the goal was only part of what pleased him.

The coach had liked Duclair’s training camp. He liked his first two games, too. Then came the Rangers game, when DeBoer saw the winger slip away from the standard he had established.

So they talked.

“I need you to get back to what you were doing,” DeBoer told him.

That’s a straightforward message. And there was something encouraging tucked inside it: DeBoer felt Duclair was becoming an important part of the group. This wasn’t a coach wondering whether a player could contribute. It was a coach expecting him to keep contributing.

For Duclair, that distinction matters. The opportunity is there. So is the expectation.

Against Chicago, he delivered, and finally had a goal to show for it.

“He did a great job, and I’m glad he got rewarded,” DeBoer said, adding that Duclair could have scored a couple of times in the opening games.

That’s why this felt like more than simply getting off the scoresheet’s zero. Duclair had already earned praise for his play before the puck went in. Thursday brought the finish, along with evidence that he could take a direct challenge and turn it into something productive.

One goal doesn’t establish consistency. The next game will bring another opportunity to meet that standard.

But this was a good night for a player trying to establish his place under a new coach.

DeBoer asked for a response. Duclair gave him one that mattered.
