Jonny Brodzinski scored twice in the first period and added an assist, leading the New York Rangers to a 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Tuesday. The Rangers (29-25-4) have now won two straight and three of their last four games, while Igor Shesterkin made 36 saves to secure the win. Urho Vaakanainen tallied a goal and two assists, and J.T. Miller and Matt Rempe also found the back of the net for New York. The Islanders (25-25-7) are on a four-game losing streak, and Ilya Sorokin allowed five goals on 11 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period by Jakub Skarek, who stopped all seven shots he faced.
The game started with Vaakanainen giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 6:22 of the first period with a shot from the top of the right circle that deflected off Islanders defenseman Scott Perunovich. Romanov responded for the Islanders at 8:19, tying the game 1-1 with a point shot that deflected off Adam Fox's stick. Brodzinski put the Rangers back on top 2-1 at 12:39, scoring a one-timer through a screen, and then extended the lead to 3-1 at 19:12 with a wrist shot past Sorokin after a short pass from Fox.
In the second period, J.T. Miller made it 4-1 at 11:21, finishing a pass from Mika Zibanejad from behind the net. Rempe capped the scoring at 16:30, redirecting Brodzinskiβs point shot under Sorokinβs glove for his second goal of the season. The Rangers also dealt with injuries, as defenseman K'Andre Miller left the game with a lower-body injury in the second period, and Adam Fox exited in the third with an upper-body injury.
