Fans at UBS Arena on Friday night were treated to a great hockey game but not to a New York Islanders win. NHL leading goal-scorer Leon Draisaitl reached 100 points on the season, scoring his 48th and 49th goals, including the breakaway game-winner at 3:52 in overtime as the Oilers defeated the Islanders 2-1 Bo Horvat scored the lone goal for the Isles, tying the game in the third period, Ilya Sorokin was fantastic in the loss, making 33 saves. Calvin Pickard had 24 saves for Edmonton and received the secondary assist on Draisaitl's game-winning goal.

The Oilers dominated the opening period, outshooting the Islanders 17-6, but the game remained scoreless. Draisaitl finally broke through at 8:46 of the second period to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead they carried into the third period. “Ilya kept us in the game,” head coach Patrick Roy said. “I was very happy the way we bounced back in that second period and third period. I thought we did a lot of good things, and I was pretty proud of our group, how we defended, and the chances that we had.”

The Islanders have scored one goal in each of their last three games, all losses. They had their chances, despite being outshot by Edmonton, including chances by Anthony Duclair, Hudson Fasching and Casey Cizikas to win the game late in regulation and overtime. “We just have to cash in on those find ways to bury those,” Horvat said. “We’ve had trouble putting the puck in the net the last three games and we have to find a way.”

The Isles went 0-for-3 on the power-play after going 0-for-8 in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. “I would like to see us score more goals, there's no doubt about it, but I thought we had our chances. I have faith in our group, and I believe that eventually the puck will go in… And when you do good things, good things happen."

The Islanders host the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Sunday night. Face-off from UBS Arena is at 7:30 PM EDT.
