The New York Islanders didn’t extend their winning streak, but they bank a point for a fifth straight game and watched a Long Islander deliver on the moment he waited his whole life for.
Marshall Warren, recalled Thursday and skating in his NHL debut for the team he grew up rooting for, registered two assists in a 4–3 shootout loss in Philadelphia. The Islanders moved to 4-3-1 and have now collected at least one point in five straight after opening the season 0–3.
Warren’s fingerprints were visible on two of New York’s three goals. In the second period, he threaded a pass through the slot that Anthony Duclair tapped home to make it 2–0. In the third, with the game tied, Warren’s point shot was redirected by Maxim Tsyplakov to reclaim a 3–2 lead.
The Islanders’ start had looked like more of the same from their recent surge. Simon Holmstrom opened the scoring shorthanded off a feed from Jean-Gabriel Pageau, finishing blocker side for a 1–0 lead at 9:51 of the first. Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves but stopped only one of three shooters in the tiebreaker. The afternoon ultimately swung on Trevor Zegras, who scored twice in regulation, added an assist, and scored in the shootout. His second goal — a crease scramble on the power play after a Scott Mayfield high-sticking penalty — forced overtime at 3–3.
Flyer goaltender Samuel Ersson made 23 saves and none bigger in OT when he robbed Bo Horvat. "I really thought we won the game when Drouin made that pass to Horvat, said head coach Patrick Roy after the game. "I mean, that was a really good save."
The Isles continue their road trip Tuesday night in Boston.
