Fifteen years ago, a lighthouse-related vision for the New York Islanders was rejected by voters on Long Island.
On Thursday night, a very different Lighthouse project won the vote.
After 43 days, 80,490 submissions and an eight-jersey tournament, Islanders fans selected the navy Lighthouse concept as the basis for the team’s third jersey for the 2027-28 season.
The design defeated a navy sweater featuring “ISLANDERS” across the chest in the final round, giving the franchise something it has never had before: a lighthouse as its primary jersey crest.
“Can’t wait to see all the fans in the jersey. Can’t wait to wear it. Let’s go!” Mathew Barzal said while revealing the winner on social media.
The symbolism is difficult to miss for longtime Islanders fans.

The lighthouse has been intertwined with franchise history for decades. It appeared as a secondary logo during the controversial fisherman era of the 1990s, while Charles Wang’s ambitious Lighthouse Project later sought to transform the Nassau Coliseum property and secure the Islanders’ future on Long Island.
That vision never materialized, contributing to years of uncertainty before the franchise eventually found its permanent home at UBS Arena.
Now the lighthouse is returning under much different circumstances.
The winning concept emerged from the first NHL jersey contest allowing fans to create the foundation of an official team sweater. After receiving more than 80,000 entries, the Islanders narrowed the field to eight before three rounds of voting.
The navy Lighthouse dominated the semifinal, defeating the fisherman design with 68.7% of the vote before advancing to the championship round.
The Islanders and Fanatics will now refine the submission into an NHL-ready uniform while maintaining the integrity of the winning concept.
Long Island once voted against an Islanders Lighthouse project.
Fifteen years later, Islanders fans just voted overwhelmingly to put one on their jersey.
