Marc Gatcomb has taken full advantage of his opportunity at the NHL level, proving that he belongs with the New York Islanders. Saying he was an organizational afterthought may be an understatement, but injuries and his style of play gave him a first shot and then a second to stick with the Isles, and he's giving Patrick Roy very little reason to take him out of the lineup.

Gatcomb scored his third goal in five games on Saturday night vs. Winnipeg, his 11th NHL game. He was initially making a mark through his physicality but has recently added a scoring touch to a fourth-line who has started contributing regularly. "I look at that goal from Marc Gatcomb and go, that's why you're in the NHL, because you understand your system, the forecheck, how it's supposed to work," said MSG Networks analyst Thomas Hickey. "You don't anticipate getting a good bounce like that, but for him, you're that third guy; you have to hover and read the play."

The 25-year-old forward and UCONN product, who worked his way up through the AHL ranks, has showcased his versatility, work ethic, and ability to contribute in multiple areas of the game. While he may not have been a highly-touted prospect, Gatcomb’s strong performances have forced the coaching staff to keep him in the lineup.

What stands out most about Gatcomb is his relentless energy and responsible two-way play. Whether it’s forechecking hard, making smart defensive plays, or battling along the boards, he brings the kind of grit and determination that teams value. He has also chipped in offensively, proving he can generate scoring chances and finish plays when given the opportunity.

One of the biggest challenges for young players trying to solidify an NHL roster spot is consistency. Gatcomb has met that challenge head-on, delivering steady performances night after night. He understands what it takes to stay in the NHL and continues to put in the work necessary to prove himself at the highest level.

Every so often, the Islanders seem to have some AHL player come out of nowhere to make a contribution. From Alan Quine and Hudson Fasching to Kyle MacLean and now Gatcomb. Each one previously earned a longer NHL look and Gatcomb is on that same trajectory.
