In typical Ilya Sorokin fashion —calm, collected, and utterly unbothered —the New York Islanders’ star goaltender addressed offseason rumors with the same composure he brings to the crease. Speaking with RG Media, Sorokin shot down trade speculation, emphasized his loyalty to the Islanders, and reflected on a busy summer for the franchise.

“I wasn’t surprised by the rumors. It’s part of the business,” he said. “What did surprise me was how seriously people took them.” With a no-movement clause firmly in place, the idea of Sorokin being dealt anytime soon was always far-fetched. Instead, Sorokin’s focus remains on what’s ahead—and on supporting his close friend Alexander Romanov, who signed a long-term deal with the club. “He earned it,” Sorokin said proudly. “He’s matured a lot.”

Romanov’s extension coincided with the departure of Noah Dobson, a move Sorokin didn’t see coming. “That one surprised me,” he admitted. “But the salary cap makes tough decisions necessary.” I’m really happy for Sasha (Romanov) and his family. He’s a great guy and a great player,” Sorokin said. “Over the past couple of years, he’s grown a lot and matured. But honestly, it wasn’t a surprise—it’s something he earned with his hard work.”

On Patrick Roy, Sorokin praised the hands-off approach toward goaltending, deferring to the goalie coaches while noting Roy’s occasional insights. “He doesn’t get too involved with the goalies—he has a lot on his plate,” Sorokin said. “During the season, he gave some advice, but that only happened a couple of times. Overall, he trusts the goalie coach, and that’s who runs most of our training.”

As the Islanders retool and reshape, Sorokin remains a steadying force, and he will need to be their best player on the ice most nights if the Isles are to return to the playoffs.
