Mathieu Darche continues to reshape the New York Islanders organization from the inside out, and one of his latest moves is flying under the radar but could have a lasting impact. According to Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News, the Islanders have hired Jason Berger as their new head equipment manager, bringing over a key piece from the Tampa Bay Lightning’s championship infrastructure.

Berger spent eight seasons with the Lightning and played a major role in the team’s back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021. Known around the league for his high energy, tireless work ethic, and attention to detail, Berger helped build a locker room culture in Tampa that emphasized preparation, professionalism, and consistency.

Equipment Managers are the unsung heroes of a locker-room, often preparing for gamedays hours before players arrive. “My pre-game routine consists of making sure all the supplies are stocked, set up benches, organize the bench spares and be sure the players have everything they need, said Berger in a 2020 feature from his alma mater, Johnson & Wales University. "Game time arrives and anything can happen from equipment breaking to skates needing to be sharpened.”

The author of the story about the 2007 alumnus was Caitlin Isles, by the way. I kid you not.

This move reunites Berger with Darche, who worked in Tampa’s front office during those Cup years. The familiarity and trust between them will be essential as the Islanders transition to a new era under Darche’s leadership. While equipment managers don’t often get the headlines, they are vital to day-to-day operations, serving as the behind-the-scenes glue that keeps players comfortable and focused. From managing gear changes to travel logistics, Berger’s experience in a championship environment is expected to set a new standard in the Islanders’ dressing room.

“The moment the [game] clock struck 00:00 it was a bit of a blur,” Berger said. “As a kid dreaming of winning the Stanley Cup, you never really know what it will feel like when the time comes. In that moment, I just grabbed onto whoever was near me and we simultaneously jumped and screamed pure joy. Lifting the Stanley Cup is indescribable. It very well might be the lightest 35lbs I’ve ever lifted.”

The hire also represents another subtle but significant cultural shift for the franchise. Berger brings the habits and expectations of a perennial contender to a team hungry for playoff success. In a league where every small edge matters, Berger’s presence adds another layer to the support staff Darche is building after having watched a model produce championships in Tampa.
