It's been an up-and-down season for New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin, and his fluctuating performances are evident in his win-loss record. This inconsistency has led to him accomplishing something somewhat dubious for the second time in his career.
Per Eric Hornick in The Skinny, following Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, Sorokin has a record of 24-20-4 marking the second time in his career (also 2022-23) that Ilya Sorokin has won at least 20 games and loss at least 20 regulation games in the same season. Tommy Salo and Rick DiPietro are the only other Islander goalies to do that twice.

His workload is a big reason why he hit those numbers. Sorokin has now appeared in 48 games; if he plays three more, he will be the first goalie to appear in at least 51 games four times as an Islander. After Semyon Varlamov went down to a lower-body injury, Sorokin was overworked as head coach Patrick Roy had reservations about playing Marcus Hogberg. However, Hogberg was fantastic in limited opportunities, but just as he was ready to earn more playing time, he suffered a hand injury that once again led to Sorokin playing with little to off nights consistently.
Sorokin has played poorly at times and has been exceptional at times. He hasn't yet returned to the level of an All-Star or Vezina Trophy runner-up, but he's been better than he was in 2023-24, when backup Varlamov took over as the team's No. 1 goalie late in the season. Overall, the 29-year-old has a 2.77 GAA and .905 save percentage, which are respectable numbers, but more is required for Sorokin to lift a middle-of-the-road roster to the post-season.
