NY Islanders growing game and fanbase foundation with Learn to Play program

The New York Islanders' Learn to Play program is returning to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage this August, continuing one of the organization's most successful grassroots initiatives aimed at introducing the game to the next generation.

Designed for children ages 5-9, the eight-week clinic is part of the Islanders' Future Islanders Program, which helps first-time players learn the fundamentals of hockey before transitioning into local house leagues.

"This Future Islanders program, taught by former players and coaching staff from the New York Islanders organization, includes hands-on training skills and all necessary equipment in the early stages of learning hockey," Oyster Bay Town Councilman Andrew Monteleone said in announcing the program's return.

One of the biggest barriers to youth hockey has long been the cost of equipment. The program attempts to help with that challenge by providing a full set of gear for first-time participants. Registration costs $295 and includes a jersey, stick, helmet, skates, gloves, shoulder pads, hockey pants, shin guards, and an equipment bag.

The program also gives young players an opportunity to learn from Isles alumni, even if only their parents know who they are on day one. Former Islanders Arron Asham and Radek Martinek are scheduled to make special appearances during the clinic, giving participants a chance to meet two fan favorites while developing their skills.

Sessions begin Aug. 5 and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. While developing future NHL players is never the expectation, programs like Learn to Play continue to strengthen hockey's foundation on Long Island.
