If there’s been one constant through New York Islanders training camp, it’s Patrick Roy’s glowing reviews of 20-year-old center Calum Ritchie. That admiration carried over Thursday night after Ritchie’s steady play helped the Isles edge the Rangers 5–4 at Madison Square Garden.
Roy didn’t hesitate when asked about the rookie’s impact. “He’s very poised with the puck. He moves the puck well. He spins very well and creates space for himself very well,” the head coach said. “So, I mean, it’s interesting for a young guy like him.”
Ritchie, a 2023 first-round pick by Colorado who arrived in the Brock Nelson trade, has been making an impact since camp began. While many rookies blend into the background in the preseason, Ritchie has stood out. His composure on the puck and decision-making under pressure have impressed both teammates and coaches.

Interesting is a positive. #Isles
Roy singled out Ritchie’s line with Emil Heineman and Kyle Palmieri as one of the bright spots of the win over the Rangers. “I thought that line was very good,” Roy said. “They were playing against their top line all night long. For a 20-year-old, it’s impressive to see what he’s doing on the ice.”
Perhaps most telling was Roy’s trust in Ritchie late in the game. The rookie was on the ice defending a six-on-five with the Rangers pressing for the tying goal. Afterward, Ritchie said, “In that situation, I’m willing to try and block a shot. I mean, it’s pretty hard to block out an Adam Fox shot but I was trying to be in the lane.”
That moment—combined with his offensive instincts—shows just how quickly Ritchie is earning responsibility. He may still be a lock to crack the roster, but Roy’s praise makes it clear: he’s making the decision much tougher.
