There have been some memorable wins on this road trip, but nothing compared to the final minutes of the third period in Dallas on Tuesday night. Kyle Palmieri scored a short-handed goal and added an assist, and the New York Islanders held off a frantic late push to defeat the Dallas Stars 3-2 at American Airlines Center.

Jason Robertson cut the deficit to 3-2 with 1:59 remaining, scoring on a backhand rebound with goaltender Jake Oettinger pulled for an extra skater. The Stars pressed again after Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov was boarded by Mikko Rantanen with 28 seconds left, resulting in a five-minute major and game misconduct.

Dallas appeared to tie the game with 0.1 seconds remaining when Wyatt Johnston put the puck in during a net-front scramble, but the NHL Situation Room overturned the goal on video review, determining Robertson interfered with goaltender David Rittich.

“Well, I hope [Romanov] is going to be OK at this moment,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. “When you see the number, you have to lay off. Everybody knows that. And I’m proud of the way our guys handled it afterwards.”

Calum Ritchie scored his first goal as an Islander, and Bo Horvat added his team-leading 13th as the team improved to 5-1-0 on their seven-game road trip. Rittich made 22 saves. “It’s good to get the win. Good teams find a way,” Ritchie said

Ritchie opened the scoring at 10:31 of the second period before Robertson tied it at 12:26 on a give-and-go with Roope Hintz. Horvat restored the Islanders’ lead at 3:12 of the third, and Palmieri made it 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 7:38. Robertson scored both goals for Dallas (12-5-3), extending his point streak to five games (eight goals, four assists). Oettinger stopped 19 shots.

The Islanders finish their seven-game road trip on Tuesday night in Dallas.
