The New York Islanders return to UBS Arena on Saturday afternoon for a high-stakes matinee against the Ottawa Senators, with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance following a much-needed reset .

The Islanders come in riding momentum after a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, snapping a four-game losing streak in Peter DeBoer’s debut behind the bench. That win steadied a team that had been slipping at the worst time and now sits at 91 points, locked in a tight race for the final Eastern Conference playoff spots. New York trails Ottawa by three points for the second Wild Card, while also battling Philadelphia and Detroit in a crowded standings picture.

Matthew Schaefer continues to headline the Islanders’ surge, fresh off tying the NHL record for goals by a rookie defenseman with his 23rd of the season. He leads all rookie blueliners and has been a driving force on both ends of the ice. Up front, Brayden Schenn has provided a boost since the trade deadline, scoring six goals in 16 games, while the power play showed signs of life with two goals in DeBoer’s first game. In net, Ilya Sorokin is expected to start, carrying a 29-win season and league-leading seven shutouts into a crucial matchup.

Ottawa enters on a three-game winning streak, including a dominant 5-1 victory over Florida. Led by Tim Stützle (82 points), Drake Batherson (69 points), and Brady Tkachuk, the Senators bring both offensive firepower and physicality, ranking among the league leaders in hits. Their power play, clicking at 23.5%, remains a key threat.

This season series has been tight, with both previous meetings decided by one goal with the Islanders losing 3-2 on Mar. 19, a game where Bradt Tkachuk scored in the final seconds.

With only a handful of games remaining, Saturday is less about standings math and more about execution. Another win keeps them in the fight — anything less would prove costly and something the team may not be able to recover from.
