Mike Bossy was born to score goals and on January 24, 1981, the New York Islanders legend etched his name into hockey history by becoming just the second player ever to score 50 goals in 50 games, joining the elite company of Maurice “Rocket” Richard.

The moment came in a dramatic fashion, underscoring Bossy’s flair for the spectacular.

Facing the Quebec Nordiques at the Nassau Coliseum, Bossy entered the game with 48 goals in 49 games. After being held scoreless through two periods and most of the third, he notched his 49th on the power play with 4:10 left, keeping the crowd on edge as time ticked down. Then, with less than two minutes remaining in the third period, Bossy delivered the iconic moment. On a feed from linemate Bryan Trottier, Bossy fired a wrist shot at 18:31 past Nordiques goaltender Ron Grahame, securing his place in NHL lore.

The goal and Bossy's celebration remains one of the most iconic in NHL history.

“I know what he’s [Richard] going to say when I see him,” Bossy said. “He’ll claim he still holds the record because I scored my 50th in the last minute and he scored his with two minutes to go!”

Bossy’s milestone was not just a personal triumph but a testament to his consistency, precision, and scoring prowess. Known for his quick release and ability to find open ice, Bossy redefined what it meant to be a pure goal scorer. His achievement electrified Islanders fans and further cemented the dynasty-in-the-making that would go on to win four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983.

Mike Bossy’s 50-in-50 feat remains one of the most celebrated accomplishments in NHL history, symbolizing the dominance and brilliance of one of hockey’s greatest players.

It’s a moment Islanders fans will cherish forever.
