New York Islanders prospect Calle Odelius is approaching rookie camp with renewed confidence after completing his first full season in North America. The Swedish defenseman, drafted 65th overall in 2022, is back on Long Island, determined to take another step forward in his development.

“It’s been good so far,” Odelius said of rookie camp after day four. “Good to see all the boys again and finally start to compete again. It’s been a long summer and I’m excited to be back.”

Like many young European players, Odelius needed time to adapt to the smaller North American ice. “Probably the small ice,” he admitted when asked about the biggest adjustment. “You have so much less time with the puck and everyone’s so much faster.”

Last season, Odelius suited up for AHL Bridgeport after making the move over from Djurgårdens IF in Sweden. The 20-year-old blueliner leaned on veteran teammates and coaches to smooth his transition. “I had great teammates and coaches who took care of me and taught me a lot,” he said. “I felt like I took steps in the right direction every day.”

Now healthy and stronger after a full offseason of training, Odelius believes he’s in a much better position heading into camp. “I feel a lot bigger and stronger coming into this camp. I worked on my acceleration and just being stronger over the summer,” he explained.

He’s also looking forward to reuniting with fellow Swede Victor Eklund, who joined the Islanders organization this summer after being selected 16th overall. “He was a good friend of mine from before, so I’m happy and excited to have him here,” Odelius said.

Bridgeport’s new head coach, Rocky Thompson, has already made an impression. “He seems like a great guy. He wants the younger guys to develop and wants us to be a hardworking team,” Odelius said. “I’m excited for the season.”
