One of the biggest weaknesses within the NY Islanders prospect pool has been right-handed defensemen. Outside of Calle Odelius, who has struggled mightily during his time in the AHL, the cupboard has been barren. So the NY Islanders addressed the situation in the later rounds of the 2026 NHL Draft, specifically by picking Vladimir Dravecky in the 5th round.
Dravecky was unable to attend Development Camp due to visa issues, but was on the ice for training camp and made an impression.
In his one preseason appearance, Dravecky recorded an assist while earning time on the power play. He was sent back to the OHL soon after, a spot he was always going to end up in, and has continued his success with the Guelph Storm.
Through six games this season, Dravecky leads all OHL defensemen in points with nine (3 G, 6 A), doing most of his damage on the power play, where he’s recorded a goal and three assists.
With his stock rising quickly, Dravecky has an opportunity to shoot up the ranks within the Islanders' depth chart with little resistance. Traded to Guelph this summer, the Storm will host the 2027 Memorial Cup, meaning Dravecky will be in the spotlight during the CHL’s biggest event. Playing in the World Junior Championship for Czechia last season, he’ll have the opportunity to play in the tournament once again this holiday season, playing a bigger role for last season’s runner-up.
The Islanders signed Dravecky to his ELC last week, and though we likely won’t see him in the AHL or NHL this season due to the Memorial Cup, Dravecky could force the organization's hand and could make his NHL debut as early as next season.
