The New York Islanders recalled goaltender Marcus Högberg from Bridgeport for Monday's practice on an emergency basis. Semyon Varlamov is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Varlamov is expected to travel with the team for Tuesday night's game against the Montreal Canadiens, indicating that whatever kept him out of practice is not serious. The 36-year-old allowed five goals on 26 shots against the Washington Capitals on Friday afternoon as the Islanders blew a 4-2 third period and lost in overtime on Jakob Chychrun's game-winner. After a strong start to the season, Varlamov is 0-1-2 over his last three starts and has a record with a 2.89 GAA and .889 save percentage.
Hogberg, a 30-year-old Swedish goaltender with NHL experience was signed during the summer to provide some much-needed goaltending depth in the organization. He has started 10 games for Bridgeport this season, posting a 2-4-3 record with a .908 save percentage.
The 6'5 "goalie played the prior three seasons with Linkoping HC of the Swedish Hockey League, including a career-best 21 wins in 40 games last season. He also posted an impressive .914 save percentage and a 2.51 goals-against average (GAA). He was drafted 78th overall by the Ottawa Senators at the 2013 NHL Draft and has appeared in 42 NHL games over three seasons. His career record was 9-17-9 with a 3.39 GAA and .894 save percentage with the Sens.
Coming off a shutout on Saturday night versus the Buffalo Sabres, it is expected that head coach Patrick Roy will have Ilya Sorokin back between the pipes against the Habs.
