Most Fun to Watch

There should be little debate in this category. The answer is Matthew Schaefer. From entering the league, wondering if he’ll stick with the team for a full season or be returned to the Erie Otters of the OHL, to being on the cusp of making the Canadian Olympic roster. Schaefer has helped transform this team from boring to must-watch TV.

His effortless skating and unmatched wits for an 18-year-old, Schaefer seems to be breaking an NHL record every night, surpassing some of the game's greats at his age. With 24 games remaining in his rookie season, Schaefer’s 16 goals trail Phil Housley’s goal-scoring record for goals by an 18-year-old defenseman by just three - a record that has stood since 1983.

Most Improved

It’s tough to give this acknowledgment to the player who has been the Islanders' top defenseman for years, but Adam Pelech has returned to his peak.

Though his offensive numbers aren’t there (despite tripling his goals from the previous two seasons combined), Pelech has been the Isles top defenseman within the defensive zone. Matching up against the opposition's top line and playing crucial minutes late in games, Pelech has earned the trust of Patrick Roy.

Most importantly, Pelech has been healthy. He’s missed 20+ games over each of the last three seasons, but has suited up for every game in 2025-26. The best ability is availability, and Pelech has been a warrior for the Islanders.
