The New York Islanders went toe-to-toe with one of the Western Conference's hottest teams for 40 minutes Sunday night. Unfortunately, the final 20 minutes were a different story.

Dallas scored three unanswered goals in the third period to pull away for a 6-3 victory at American Airlines Center, ending the Islanders' five-game point streak (3-0-2) and handing Peter DeBoer a disappointing return to Dallas.

For two periods, the Islanders had an answer every time the Stars grabbed the lead. That changed just 4:10 into the third when Wyatt Johnston broke a 3-3 tie with a wrist shot from the slot.

Jason Robertson, who scored twice, extended the lead to 5-3 on a breakaway at 9:45 before Mikko Rantanen put the game out of reach less than four minutes later.

The Islanders (5-4-2) had their moments, particularly from Matthew Schaefer, who continues to make NHL history look routine.

The 19-year-old defenseman tied the game 1-1 in the first period, skating down the left side during four-on-four play and ripping a shot over Jake Oettinger's shoulder. It was Schaefer's 25th career goal, moving him past Bobby Orr for second-most goals by a teenage defenseman in NHL history.

But Robertson quickly answered, capitalizing on a Brayden Schenn turnover to restore Dallas' lead.

Kyle Palmieri tied things again early in the second, burying a rebound off the end boards. After Justin Hryckowian put Dallas ahead on the power play, Schenn responded with a goal of his own at 17:45.

That was the Islanders' final answer.

Ilya Sorokin finished with 32 saves, while Bo Horvat collected two assists.

The Islanders now head deeper into their Western Conference road trip looking to rediscover the defensive structure that helped fuel their recent run.
