HOW IT HAPPENED
It was the most frustrating game of the season for the NY Islanders as they were shut out 1-0 by the Detroit Red Wings. The Islanders were the dominant team for the majority of the night but couldn't manage to get a puck past Alex Lyon who made 29 saves in the shutout effort. Patrick Kane scored the lone Red Wings goal for his first of the season.
WHAT WENT RIGHT
The opportunities were there but the Isles just couldn't find the back of the net. The line of Brock Nelson, Kyle Palmieri, and Max Tsyplakov was the Isles' best trio all night, threatening what looked like from the start. Bo Horvat and Mat Barzal seemed to be missing Anthony Duclair, as the chemistry on the top unit seemed to be lacking with Simon Holmstrom. Though he didn't have much work, Ilya Sorokin was phenomenal when he needed to be, with not much he could do on the only goal allowed.
WHAT WENT WRONG
The Isles remain one of the worst shooting teams in the NHL. hHutout in half their game sthis season, they just can't seem to find a way to beat goaltenders on a nightly basis. Despite being shutout, the Islanders didn't do much wrong, the magic just wasn't there tonight.
STATS OF THE NIGHT
In two of his three starts this season, Ilya Sorokin has allowed one goal but doesn't leave the building with a win.
The Islanders are now bottom five on the NHL in shooting %, power play %, and penalty kill %.
SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE NIGHT
It's difficult to lose giving up only 11 shots but that's what the Islanders did tonight, and it's been a long time since the Wings won a game like this.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Isles travel across the state border to take on the NJ Devils for the first time this season on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
