This morning, the New York Islanders announced the signing of another college free agent to an entry-level contract. They signed 24 year old Michigan State forward Joey Larson to a one-year, entry-level contract, which is set to commence at the start of the 2025-26 season.

Larson, who recently finished his third year of college hockey, boasts an impressive NCAA career. Over 111 games, Larson recorded 39 goals and 83 points. In his final year with the Spartans, he tallied 10 goals and 24 points across 37 games. Larson spent most of his time as a second-line winger, and he seemed to excel in that role, contributing to the Spartans being the second seed in the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship.

At 6'1" and 194 pounds, Larson has the physical attributes of a professional hockey player. However, scouting reports on him are scarce. As a 24-year-old entering the Islanders' system, Larson is already one of the older prospects joining the team. He's the same age as Sam Bolduc, who has been playing professional hockey since the 2020-21 season. His professional debut is a bit delayed compared to his peers.

Larson's contract will not commence until the 2025-26 season, he will not be eligible to play within the Islanders' organization this season unless he signs an AHL contract for the remainder of the current year.

Regardless, Larson is the third NCAA free agent acquired by Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello. The other two, Max Dorrington and Gleb Veremyev, currently play with the AHL's Bridgeport Islanders. Fans will have to wait and see what Larson can bring to the table.
