The future of the New York Islanders blue line just took another exciting step forward.

On Monday, the Islanders announced they have signed top defensive prospect Kashawn Aitcheson to a three-year entry-level contract — officially bringing one of the organization’s most intriguing young players closer to the NHL.

If you’ve been following Islanders prospects, this move has felt inevitable.

Aitcheson, the 17th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, has been absolutely dominating the Ontario Hockey League this season with the Barrie Colts. Through 54 games, the 19-year-old leads all OHL defensemen in goals (28), power-play goals (15), points (70), and plus/minus (+45).

That +45 rating is second in the entire league, while his 15 power-play goals rank fourth among all OHL players — not just defensemen.

For Islanders fans dreaming about the next wave of talent, Aitcheson’s development has been impossible to ignore.

Named captain of Barrie for the 2025–26 season, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound blueliner is putting together a historic year. He recently set two franchise records for the Colts, becoming the all-time leader in points by a defenseman with 171 and establishing a new single-season goals record from the blue line with 28.

The accolades keep piling up. Aitcheson was named OHL Defenseman of the Month in both January and February, further cementing his status as one of junior hockey’s premier two-way defensemen.

Over four seasons in Barrie, Aitcheson has totaled 171 points (63 goals, 108 assists) along with 335 penalty minutes in 205 career games — the kind of stat line that screams power, offense and edge.

He’s also been a standout internationally. Aitcheson helped Canada men's national under-18 ice hockey team win gold at the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championship and added a bronze medal at the 2025 World Junior Championship.

In short, the Islanders didn’t just sign a prospect.

They may have just signed a future cornerstone defenseman.
