The New York Islanders delivered the response they desperately needed, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on Thursday night in Peter DeBoer’s debut behind the bench.
Snapping a four-game losing streak, the Islanders came out with urgency and never let up, keeping their playoff hopes alive with just three games remaining. It didn’t take long for the new voice to make an impact.
The Isles struck early, scoring twice in the opening five minutes. Brayden Schenn opened the scoring at 2:08, finishing a slick feed from Cal Ritchie on a delayed penalty. Jean-Gabriel Pageau followed later in the period, burying his own rebound to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead and set the tone.
Toronto answered back to tie the game, but the night belonged to Matthew Schaefer. The 18-year-old phenom made history midway through the second period, scoring his 23rd goal of the season to tie the NHL record for goals by a rookie defenseman, matching Hall of Famer Brian Leetch. His shot slipped through Artur Akhtyamov to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead and ignite the building.
"We're pretty pumped to have Pete back there, just everything we've worked on in practice,” Matthew Schaefer said. “We really wanted to show him what a great group we got in here.”
Emil Heineman extended the lead late in the second, finishing off a strong forecheck to make it 4-2, before Ritchie added a power-play goal in the third to put the game out of reach. Ritchie finished with a goal and an assist, while Tony DeAngelo chipped in two helpers in his return to the lineup. In goal, Ilya Sorokin made 13 saves, benefiting from a structured defensive effort in front of him.
Toronto got goals from Steven Lorentz, Easton Cowan, and Morgan Rielly, but dropped its fifth straight despite a 39-save performance from Akhtyamov.
“We've been talking all week about playoff habits,” DeBoer said. “You have to have them this time of year to give yourself a chance to get in the playoffs. I thought they delivered on that. It wasn't a perfect game, but I loved how fast we played.”
For the Islanders, it was exactly what they needed — a complete effort, a historic moment from Schaefer, and a much-needed win to keep their season alive in the Eastern Conference race.
