The New York Islanders' search for a new third jersey has sparked creativity across Long Island and beyond, with thousands of fans submitting concepts and sharing their ideas online. The overwhelming response to the organization's fan design contest has shown just how passionate Islanders fans remain about the team's identity, and now Matthew Barzal has offered his own vision.

Speaking to the Bleecher Report at Fanatics Fan Fest, Barzal was asked what his ideal Islanders alternate jersey would look like. His answer reflected many of the themes fans have embraced throughout the contest.

"I would go dark navy," Barzal said. "I like the idea of white and orange stripes on the bottom of the jersey."

When asked whether he'd prefer the lighthouse or the fisherman as the focal point, Barzal admitted he likes both iconic (even if debated) symbols of Islanders history.

"I like the idea of the lighthouse. I think probably the fisherman for me," Barzal said. "I've actually kind of messed around a little bit. I've seen some good ones."

Barzal's comments come as Islanders supporters continue to flood social media with mockups featuring everything from modernized Fisherman logos to sleek lighthouse-inspired designs. Recent numbers released by the team have the number of entries approaching 70,000. While the organization has yet to reveal which concepts could influence the final product, the contest has become one of the club's most engaging fan initiatives in recent years.

A dark navy jersey featuring classic orange and white striping has potential and could emerge as one of the most popular themes among submissions, blending a fresh look with the franchise's traditional colors. It will be fascinating to see what ends up being the choice, and whether the Islanders use the opportunity to do something clean and classic or take more risky design chances.

Whether the Islanders ultimately lean toward the beloved Fisherman, the lighthouse, or an entirely new concept, the fan base is eager to help shape the team's next look. And if Barzal had his way, a dark navy sweater with timeless Islanders elements might be exactly what skates onto the ice during the 2027-28 season.
