New York Islanders top pick Matthew Schaefer is already making himself at home on Long Island.

The 17-year-old defenseman, selected first overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, took part in his first game action since suffering a collarbone injury last winter. His performance during the Islanders’ Blue and White Scrimmage, paired with a standing ovation from a packed crowd, left a lasting impact.

“It was amazing to get my feet wet,” Schaefer said. “I think the last game I played was December 30th, so I’ve been dying to get back into something close to game action.” Schaefer admitted his conditioning could still improve—“my cardio needs some work”—but emphasized how much he’s grown just in a few short days. “Monday I made a step. Tuesday, another. Just want to keep progressing.”

The fans were what truly blew him away.

“They were unreal. If that’s what it’s like for a scrimmage, I can’t even imagine a home game,” he said. “I love this place. That’s the word - love. I could see myself being here for a long time.” He’s already building chemistry with teammates like Danny Nelson and soaking in knowledge from the Islanders’ staff, praising the development week as “amazing” and “so much fun.”

Given his age (he was one of the youngest players in the draft), there was initial thought that Schaefer could return to juniors or even have a path to play in the NCAA this season. However, given the trade of Noah Dobson and the early skill and poise he's displaying, it's becoming increasingly likely that he gets an opportunity to stay around the team and play at least nine games this season. Anything more than that would burn a year in his entry-level contract.

Those are questions and concerns for another day in a few months. For now, between the fans, the environment, and his play, Schaefer is embracing it all. “I love this place,” he repeated. And judging by the crowd’s reaction, the feeling might already be mutual.
