When the NY Islanders acquired Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks in January of 2023, former GM Garth Snow sent a first-round pick, Anthony Beuvillier, and the team's top prospect, Aatu Raty, for the current Islanders captain.

Three seasons later, Raty has struggled to produce in Vancouver, with the Canucks placing the 23-year-old on waivers today.

According to Patrick Johnston of The Province and The Vancouver Sun, Canucks GM Ryan Johnson tried to trade Raty before placing him on waivers but had no takers.

Once considered the top prospect before the 2021 NHL Draft, Raty played 106 games for the Canucks, scoring 12 goals and adding 14 assists.

Playing mostly fourth-line minutes on a rebuilding Canucks team, Raty did prove himself valuable, mostly in the face-off dot. Over the past two seasons, Raty won 58.95% of draws and 56.8% in four games this season.

Raty made his NHL debut on December 23, 2026, scoring in his debut in a 5-1 win against the Florida Panthers. Overall, Raty played 12 games as a member of the Islanders, scoring two goals.

Don’t expect a reunion with the Islanders as the team is flush with centers. Mat Barzal is expected to take over his role in the middle when he returns to the ice, along with Brayden Schenn being more than competent at center, and Kyle MacLean still in the press box.

There’s a strong possibility that a team takes a chance on Raty and puts in a claim, as organizations are always looking for bottom-six forwards, especially one as dominant in the face-off circle and still just 23 years old.
