The NY Islanders played like they believed they were one of the better teams in the NHL last night and it showed on the scoreboard, as they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3.
Games in Toronto always mean more to players, as multiple Islanders grew up in the Toronto area and typically have family and friends present for their return to Ontario. However, a Saturday night game in Canada brings another element of nostalgia for players, as Hockey Night in Canada was present. Regardless of where you live in the Great White North, every Canadian who loves hockey has become familiar with the program. Isaiah George, who scored his first career goal last night, even mentioned keeping the Hockey Night in Canada towel used during interviews as a highlight of his night.
Roy has a laugh
Before puck drop, Elliotte Friedman had Islanders Head Coach Patrick Roy on the program, discussing the importance of Anthony Duclair returning to the lineup.
At the end of the segment, Friedman brought up Roy's grandchildren, Lionel and Barron, and a clip from the summer when the two asked Roy if he was a better goalie than Hockey Night in Canada analyst and former Islanders netminder Kelly Hrudey.
"Well, he's not here tonight, Patrick," said Friedman. "But he'll be watching at home, so could you please look into the camera and tell us 'Yes. I was better than Kelly Hrudey."
With a smile on his face, Roy obliges.
Well before saying this, it's hard for me to say this because he's a former Islander, and the love I have for former Islanders," Roy said." But yes, I was better than Kelly Hrudey."
With a laugh between Frieman and Roy, Roy makes sure to say "sorry" to Hrudey as well.
