For the second training camp in a row, Hudson Fasching was stung by the injury bug. Missing over a week of camp this time around was enough for Lou Lamoriello to place Fasching on waivers where the NY Islanders will need to wait and see if he'll pass and report to Bridgeport.
Fasching became a fan favorite two seasons ago after being called up from Bridgeport as his hustle and determination were crucial in the Islanders' push towards the playoffs. His efforts saw him earn a two-year, one-way deal with the Islanders.
Fasching appeared in 43 games for the Islanders last season, scoring four goals and adding 10 assists, playing up and down the lineup wherever a plug was needed.
Injuries at the worst time
It appeared Faching had the inside track to becoming the Islanders 13th forward heading into opening night, but Lamoriello had other plans, making some surprise moves.
Aside from waiving Fasching, Pierre Engvall, who signed a 7-year extension with the Islanders last off-season will also hit the waiver wire. Samuel Bolduc, the seventh defenseman for most of last season, was also waived in favor of Dennis Chowlowski.
Fasching is no stranger to the AHL, playing most of his career in the league since being drafted in the fourth round in 2018 by the Los Angeles Kings.
All signs point to Fasching being the first player called up if a regular in the lineup suffers an injury, so there's a high probability we haven't seen the last of him in Islanders colors. But you've got to feel bad for a guy who works so hard and hasn't gotten a break the last two off-seasons.
