Clip of Former NY Islanders forward Ray Ferraro telling Stan Fischler about HOF student at his hockey school
After a first period goal, Ray Ferarro shares a story with Stan Fischler about the time he coached a pair of brothers who eventually made an impact in the NHL
The NY Islanders and New Jersey Devils were separated by just two points on the morning of April 16, 1993, as the two teams were set to face off that evening at Nassau Coliseum in game 84 (teams played 84 game schedules at this time), with the winner clinching the third seed in the Patrick Division.
The Islanders took a commanding 3-0 lead into the first intermission, capped off by a Ray Ferraro breakaway.
Stanley Cup winning brothers
Ferarro was interviewed by Stan Fischer between periods, where he mentioned he has a history with the Devils' star rookie defenseman, Scott Niedermayer.
"After my first-year pro, there's a big hockey school in British Columbia in a little town called Penticton, where Paul Kariya, who's going to be a draft pick, played his junior ," Ferraro told The Maven. "And Scott and his little brother Robbie were there. They were I think six and nine at the time, and they were good back then, and man, is he fast. Good thing I had a couple of feet on him on this play here because he was coming after me in a hurry."
Niedermayer scored a goal of his own early in the second period, but the Islanders won the game by a score of 8-4.
Niedermayer and Ferraro had their fair share of matchups against one another, spending multiple seasons in the same division from 1993 up until Ferraro's retirement in 2002.
Retiring in 2010, Neidermayer finished his career with four Stanley Cup rings, winning three with the Devils and one playing alongside his brother Rob with the Anaheim Ducks, and was inducted into the Hockey HOF in 2013.
The Niedermayer brothers started a school of their own, the Niedermayer Hockey School, in their hometown of Cranbrook, BC which ran across their playing careers.
