Divergent emotions from the NY Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs after Kyle MacLean's first NHL goal

MacLean was serving the two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty assessed to Bo Horvat and jolted out of the penalty box as the penalty expired. Cal Clutterbuck swept a backhanded pass to MacLean, who corralled the pass near center ice and was in on goal alone. A nifty move had Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov on his stomach as MacLean slid the puck into the back of the net, giving the Isles a 2-1 lead.

Making the moment extra special is that his father, John MacLean, was behind the Islanders bench to witness his son's milestone. MacLean tried to remain professional, not showing much more than a grin, but it was obvious he was a glowing, proud father on the inside.

"He [John MacLean] had a little reaction, but don't tell anyone about it," said Patrick Roy regarding his assistant coach's response to Kyle's first goal. "But great for him. He's been playing very well for us and playing a good role for our team. It's nice to see a young player being rewarded like this.

In the other locker room, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe was unhappy with his team's mistakes when he felt they played well enough to win. Allowing a goal to MacLean after it seemed Toronto had shifted the ice in their favor, Keefe had harsh words for his team, allowing a player exiting the box to slip behind all five players to head in on goal unscathed.

"It has nothing to do with this point of the year - this is the National Hockey League," Keefe said. "That's pee-wee stuff. It has nothing to do with the season or anything like that - you play on the power play in the National Hockey League, they should not get behind you coming out of the penalty box."

The Maple Leafs went winless against the Islanders this season in their three matchups, as the Islanders always seem to show up when taking on Toronto. Clutterbuck let that point be known as he got into it with John Tavares as time expired.
