This year hasn't been very fun for the New York Islanders, in fact it's been about the total opposite of fun., They are just 35-34-10 on the season and they've been eliminated from the playoffs already.
Islanders'One of the more frustrating things for the Islanders through 79 games on the season is just how many goals they've allowed. The Islanders calling card under Barry Trotz is that they're sound defensively and for the most part, they've been that over his four years here. This year it's been a disaster.
Through 79 games, the Islanders have allowed five goals or more 16 times! That's 20% of the games allowing in a five spot, for context the two years prior they allowed five goals or more in just 14 out of 124 games. That's a much more reasonable 11.3%.
More recently, in this little five game losing streak they've allowed five goals or more three games in a row and they've done it in five of their last nine. Putrid.
In response to the Islanders recent play, Barry Trotz had some harsh criticism saying "I hate being a team that whines. I don’t like to coach teams that whine all the time.”
The Islanders just feel like they're done. They're out of it and they know and the effort has gone out the window. I know I don't speak for only myself when I say that I can't wait to put this season in the rearview, and I think the team feels the same way.
16 games with five or more goals allowed with Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin in goal, both fine goalies, is embarrassing. The offseason can't come soon enough.
