The New York Islanders signed 2022 second-round draft pick, Calle Odelius, to a three-year entry-level contract per CapFriendly. Odelius fell to the Islanders at 65th overall after projecting as a first-round talent leading up to the NHL draft on July 7th and 8th.
Odelius' three-year contract carries a $950K AAV and an $870K cap hit with multiple signing and performance bonuses.
Odelius has spent the last three seasons playing in Djurgardens IF’s organization of the SHL at the U20 level and seven games at the SHL level in 2021-22. He tallied seven goals and 30 points in 43 contests alongside fellow 2022 top prospects Liam Öhgren and Noah Östlund.
The 18-year-old Swedish defenseman stands at five-foot-eleven, 185 pounds, and is described as an elite skater:
"His retrievals start with a shoulder check for incoming threats and options. Then Odelius layers deception on the first touch before exploding out of his retrieval and into space. He'll bait another forechecker into the zone if only to create more of a numbers advantage up ice, and with his skating and handling skills, it almost always works."
Lamoriello stated that the Islanders will not hold a developmental camp this summer, however, all of the prospects drafted on July 8th by the Islanders will attend training camp in September. Odelius will be afforded the chance to make the Islanders, but it's an unlikely scenario given he's behind at least Robin Salo, Sebastian Aho, and Grant Hutton on the defensive depth chart. The likely scenario is that Odelius will return to Djurgardens on loan in Swedens second ranked HockeyAllsvenskan.
