After beating the Flyers last night in their own building, the New York Islanders traveled to Philadelphia this time. Semyon Varlamov got the start and in the first period, the Islanders jumped out to an early lead.
Just 2:08 into the game, Robin Salo got one to go, his first career NHL goal gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead.
After a Robin Salo penalty, the Islanders went to the penalty kill and James van Riemsdyk got his 10th of the year on the man advantage. After playing a decent first period, the Islanders left tied at one. The second period, was another rocky one.
For New York, it was Josh Bailey giving them the lead once again. It was a good play from Josh to go to the front of the net and find the rebound. Was it rocket science? Nope, but sometimes when you're struggling you have to go back to the basics.
That one goal lead did not last long as Travis Konecny would tie it up after a Semyon Varlamov mistake.
I mean what kind of effort was that? Sure, Semyon Varlamov made some stellar saves tonight but unfortunately, this is going to stick out like a sore thumb. A key mistake killed any momentum the Islanders had at the end of the period.
As for the third, well, it wasn't great (at first). The Isles weren't generating anything and finally, Claude Giroux made the Islanders pay with a nasty shot in on Semyon Varlamov. Zdeno Chara and Scott Mayfield got stuck on the ice together was not ideal for the Isles and it cost them there.
Just when things looked like they couldn't get better, Scott Mayfield throws one towards the net and Casey Cizikas, after scoring his first goal of the season last night, tied this puppy up at three.
This goal would end up forcing overtime for the New York Islanders. The overtime period was wild. It started out slow but you had a couple impressive saves from Carter Hart and Semyon Varlamov to keep the game tied before they went to a shootout.
The goalie clinic continued as there were nine rounds before Oliver Wahlstrom finally found the back of the net. They needed this one tonight, badly, and Oliver stepped up in a huge way for his team.
It wasn't pretty but a win is a win and now they head back home to take on the Arizona Coyotes on Friday.
