At the start of training camp, NY Islanders head coach Patric Roy said that Oliver Wahlstrom and Simon Holmstrom were fighting for roster spots and wanted the two to force himself and Lou Lamoriello to make some difficult decisions. Well, the head coach and GM will be facing some difficult decisions, but it's been Liam Foudy who's forcing them to be made.
Foudy is on a one-year, two-way deal with the Islanders this offseason, and has stood out as one of the teams most impressive players throughout the preseason.
The former 18th overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2018, the same year Wahlstrom was selected 11th overall, has been a menace in the three preseason games he's appeared in.
Not making life easy for management
In his first game against the NY Rangers, Foudy didn't make it onto the score sheet but led the team in shots-on-goal with five in under 11 minutes of ice time. Last night, playing in his third game in four nights, Foudy scored his first of the preseason, beating goaltender Jake Allen of the NJ Devils.
"It's been a long camp so far," said Fouody after last nights game. "The back-to-back at the end is not the easiest thing, but I'm never going to complain when you get a chance to showcase yourself and have another opportunity at a game. So I was happy to find out I was playing again tonight so it was a lot of fun out there."
Foudy's greatest strength is his speed and his ability to slot alomst anywhere in the lineup.
His biggest oppositions for what should be the 13th forward position are Wahlstrom and Hudson Fasching. Wahlstrom is more suited to play a top-6 role, whereas Fasching has more of a grind-it-out bottom-6 mentality. Foudy, meanwhile, is capable of playing in either of those roles.
Whether or not he makes the team out of camp, Foudy has not made Lamoriello's decision easy.
