The New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils for the second time this preseason. The Isles scored five goals to defeat the Devils 5-1 on goals from Bo Horvat, Fredrik Karlstrom, Liam Foudy, Kyle MacLean, and Oliver Wahlstrom.
Semyon Varlamov and Jakub Skarek combined to shut the door on the Devils, giving the New York Islanders their second win of the preseason.
Friday night’s effort was much more consistent with the type of play Patrick Roy has been instilling in the team, getting the lead early and then shutting the door in the third. Moreover, the Isles avoided the costly mental lapses that led to the epic collapse at MSG a few nights ago.
So, with that in mind, here’s a look at three key points on the New York Islanders big win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night at UBS Arena.
Three key points on the New York Islanders preseason win over the New Jersey Devils
The penalty kill was much improved
The penalty kill looked better on Friday night. The Devils scored their lone goal with the man advantage, but it was encouraging to see the Isles keep the Devils in check.
For the most part, the Isles did a good job of keeping the front of the net clear, while avoiding messy traffic. That allowed Varlamov and Skarek to make the saves they needed to.
As for the Timo Meier power play goal in the second period, it was an unfortunate lapse in coverage. The goal originated from a draw that went back to the point. The initial point shot landed on the doorstep where Dawson Mercer fed Meier streaking down the right side. Meier walked in and beat Varlamov for the goal.
The goal was pretty, but it wasn’t bad as the Isles’ only real mistake in the night.
Skarek looked just fine
Skarek replaced Varlamov for the third. He made eight saves, sealing the deal for the win. It’s worth pointing out that the Isles played well in front of him in the third, reducing the need for big saves.
Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see Skarek playing well as such performances will do well for his confidence.
Thus far, Skarek could be making a case to back up Varlamov to start the season. However, Marcus Hogberg’s recent outings could have given him the inside track on the backup role.
The power play stood out
The New York Islanders got two power play tallies on the night. One of the usual suspects and the other from Fredrik Karlstrom.
The Karlstrom goal in particular makes me think Karlstrom could be pushing for a spot on the roster this season. Roy has already lauded Karlstrom’s performance this preseason. Plus, Friday night’s power play goal could be part of a growing case for Karlstrom.
While the likeliest destination for Karlstrom is Bridgeport, an argument could be made for Karlstrom to make the club. With Kyle MacLean looking better, Maxim Tsyplakov sharp, and potentially Simon Holmstrom jumping into the top six, someone like Pierre Engvall could be on the bubble.
It will be interesting to see if Karlstrom can make the team out of camp this year. Otherwise, he could be at the top of the list for a call-up this year.
