Maxim Tsyplakov has earned his spot on the New York Islanders
Maxim Tsyplakov's hard work has earned him a spot on the second line with the New York Islanders. Meanwhile, Simon Holmstrom seems to have entrenched himself on the third line, allowing the Islanders to get depth scoring from the bottom six.
Maxim Tsyplakov has earned his spot on the New York Islanders' second line. During media availability following Wednesday’s practice, New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy addressed questions regarding Maxim Tsyplakov.
Reporters asked Roy if Tsyplakov had earned the coaching staff’s trust. But then Roy corrected reporters, saying it was a question of merit. In particular, reporters wanted to know if Tsyplakov could adjust well to life in North America and then play alongside stars like Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri.
Roy was adamant about the fact that Tsypakov had earned the spot on the second line.
The comments underscore Tsyplakov’s hard work and eagerness to adjust to life with the New York Islanders. Tsyplakov was considered one of the top KHL free agents this offseason. The Isles were able to land him on The Island and now find themselves reaping the rewards of a bright young talent.
Moving forward, Tsyplakov should provide the Isles with a strong netfront presence while using his high hockey IQ to make smart plays. Roy has lauded Tsyplakov throughout camp, calling him smart numerous times.
Granted, Tysplakov is not the fastest or most dynamic player. However, he adds punch and strong playmaking abilities that could balance the speed and skill of Nelson and Palmieri. As it stands, the New York Islanders' second line could be one of the most dangerous in the Metro Division.
Simon Holmstrom deserves to be with Pageau and Lee
At the start of camp, Simon Holmstrom had lined up on the second line. However, Tsyplakov’s emergence has seemingly pushed Holmstrom out of the top six.
But with Holmstrom being too good to be a grinder in the bottom six, where does he stand?
Roy addressed that issue, stating that Holmstrom had also earned his spot on the third line with captain Anders Lee and center Jean-Gabriel Pageau. As such, it appears the odd man out is Pierre Engvall.
Engvall could still be in the mix. But judging from the Isles’ last game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Engvall may be sitting in the press box more often than not this upcoming season.
So, having Holmstrom on the third line makes the most sense for the Islanders at this point. As Roy said, the Isles want to go with the best possible lineup. Having Holmstrom achieves that aim. Holmstrom adds speed to a line that has been criticized for lacking it. Plus, Holmstrom’s upside gives the Isles a better opportunity to add more depth scoring from the bottom six.
All told, Roy stated that the team is essentially ready to go. If that’s indeed the case, Friday night’s game against the New York Rangers will look to be a dress rehearsal for Opening Night.
