It was the closest we've seen to an NHL lineup so far in the preseason, as the NY Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 at UBS Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Isles found themselves on the man advantage four times in the first period, scoring once on the power play on a Mat Barzal goal from the middle of the ice, with Maxim Tsyplakov screening the goaltender. Kyle MacLean and Anders Lee added two more goals for the Isles, but it looked like we were headed to 3-on-3, knotted up at three with under a minute to play. Scott Mayfield threaded a pass from the wall to Kyle Palmieri, who on his second attempt beat Alexei Kolosov for the game-winner
WHAT WENT RIGHT
Tsyplakov looked at home playing in a top 6 role for the first time this preseason and also looks to be holding down the net-front presence on the top power play.
Jakub Skarek played the full game for the Islanders, and despite giving up three goals, he made some outstanding saves that kept the Islanders in the game.
WHAT WENT WRONG
While the power play was clicking, the Islanders still allowed two more goals while on the penalty kill. It's still early and there's time to hash things out, but the Islanders do not want to start the season with a struggling PK
STATS OF THE NIGHT
Barzal finished with two points including his third goal of teh preseason.
Julien Gauthier continues to push for a roster spot, finishing with three hits in under 10 minutes while playing a fourth-line role.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Islanders finish the preseason on Friday night playing host to the NY Rangers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
