NY Islanders beat the NJ Devils scoring 5 goals on the night
The NY Islanders got their second victory of the preseason putting together a complete performance
Tonight was perhaps the most complete game the NY Islanders have played this preseason as they beat the NJ Devils 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Isles got off to a hot start, heading into the first intermission with a three-goal lead with goals from Fredrick Karlstrom, Kyle MacLean, and Bo Horvat. They extended that lead after 40 minutes, with Liam Foudy continuing his impressive preseason and Oliver Wahlstrom scoring his first.
WHAT WENT RIGHT
Semyon Varlamov continues to impress in the absence of Ilya Sorokin. The Isles netminder played 40 minutes allowing a single goal. The Isles power play was clicking tonight, going 2/4, with Karlstroms goal coming off a strong drive toward the net by Samuel Bolduc who found his teammate perched on the other side of the crease. Horvat ripped a shot that beat Jake Allen, coming off a short feed from Barzal.
WHAT WENT WRONG
The Isles penalty kill was better, killing three of four Devils opportunities, but the lone goal came way too easily with Timo Meier scoring just four seconds into the man advantage.
Maxim Tsyplakov went into the dressing room halfway through the third period and didn't return. The newest Islander received multiple cross-checks from behind the net from Brendan Dillon, but Tsyplakov went on to finish his shift. It may have been precautionary but it will be something to keep an eye on tomorrow.
STATS OF THE GAME
Karlstrom and Dennis Cholowski were the only players have multiple points on the night.
Neither team got much rubber towards the net with the Islanders making the most of their opportunities scoring five goals on 17 shots, as the Devils finished with 25.
SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE GAME
Oliver Wahlstrom lights the lamp on a one-timer. Goals like this could help him make the Islanders roster.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Islanders host the Flyers on Monday for their fifth preseason game. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
