NY Islanders: Bridgeport signs two players to AHL contracts
The Bridgeport Islanders, an American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the New York Islanders, made a pair of signings on Tuesday, signing defenseman Trevor Cosgrove and forward Ashton Calder to AHL contracts.
Trevor Cosgrove - Defenseman
Cosgrove made his AHL debut with Bridgeport last season, appearing in nine games and did not register a point. In 40 games with the Worcester Railers of the ECHL last season, he scored five goals and 16 assists and picked up 26 penalty minutes(PIM). The 26-year-old played five-collegiate seasons, including four years at Colgate University.
His final college season came in 2021-22 at Northern Michigan University, where the left-handed defenseman scored nine goals and 19 assists in 37 games. Cosgrove also spent one season with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL in 2016-17, where he was named to the All-Rookie team after tallying 49 points (16G, 33A) in 53 games.
Ashton Calder - Defenseman
Like Cosgrove, Calder was a five-year collegiate player. He started his college career at Lake Superior State University and skated there from 2018-21, where he served as alternate captain for the Lakers team during his junior season. That year, Lake Superior State won the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WHCA) championship, and Calder was named Tournament MVP.
Following that season, he played at the University of North Dakota for the 2021-22 campaign and scored 11 goals and ten assists in 34 games. Last year, he finished his college career at Penn State University, scoring ten goals and seven assists in 38 games with the Nittany Lions in the Big Ten Conference. The 25-year-old right-shooting forward made his professional debut last season with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL. Calder appeared in just six games during the regular season but then scored three goals and added three assists in 17 playoff games as the Everblades won the 2023 Kelly Cup Championship.
