The NHL kicks off All-Star weekend tonight with the NHL All-Star Player Draft. This is where we’ll find exactly who NY Islanders representative Mat Barzal will play alongside at the All-Star Game in Toronto. Selections will be made by team captains and their celebrity guests chosen by the NHL.
In addition to Sunday's game, Barzal has been added to tomorrow's skills competition as a replacement for the NJ Devils' Jack Hughes, who remains out with an injury.
The Skills Competition will have a different look this season, as not every player will compete, and one winner will be crowned at the conclusion.
The competition will consist of six events, with each of the 12 participants battling it out in four of the six. The contestants will accumulate points, with the top 8 advancing to the Honda NHL Shootout. From there, the top 6 advance to the final round, the Pepsi NHL Obstacle Course. This decides the winner and who will take home a $1 million prize. Barzal will participate in the Fastenal NHL Fastest Skater, Scotiabank NHL Passing Challenge, Upper Deck NHL Stick Handling, and the Tim Horton’s NHL One Timers.
In 2020, Barzal famously took down Connor McDavid in the fastest skater competition with a time of 13.175 seconds, just .003 seconds off from the record set by Dylan Larkin. With both participating in the event tomorrow night, it’ll be one of the most anticipated storylines of the weekend.
