HOW IT HAPPENED

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist, while Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves for his 14th career shutout as the Islanders ended their six-game winless streak (0-4-2) with a 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings at UBS Arena on Friday night. Kyle Palmieri had two assists, and Anders Lee collected his 400th career point with a first-period goal for the Islanders (24-22-5). In their last game before the break, Magnus Hellberg made 26 saves for the Red Wings (21-19-8), who had won their prior two.

WHAT WENT RIGHT

The Islanders scored their first third period goal in 12 games and their first at UBS Arena since the calendar flipped to 2023 when Brock Nelson's wrist shot at 4:31 of the third period found its way through traffic from beyond the circles to give the Isles a 2-0 lead.

WHAT WENT WRONG

The only thing that really went wrong was the same thing that has gone wrong for over a month now. The Islanders' power play, again after making some adjustments and changes, went 0-for-4. Their second power-play of the game in the first period had some decent zone time and was able to get set up, but beyond that, it was more of the same.

Also, for those of you that thought Aatu Raty would start to get more ice time now that he's burned the first year of his entry-level contract and looks to be here for a while, it didn't happen tonight. Playing 5-on-5 with Matt Martin and Josh Bailey, he skated for just 8:13 TOI.

STATS OF THE GAME

Ilya Sorokin continues to be a shutout machine. The 27-year old goaltender recorded his 14th career shutout, the most of any goaltender since he made his NHL debut. He also now holds the highest percentage of starts with a shutout since 1943-44 (12.8%) surpassing the mark of former Flyers and Kings goalie Roman Cechmanek

SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE GAME

Multi-billionaire owner of the New York Mets (we love the Jeff McNeil extension btw), Steve Cohen, was in attendance as a guest of co-owner Jon Ledecky. Cohen and his wife wore the Reverse Retro Fisherman jerseys and spent time in the suite and Ledecky's seats behind the net.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Islanders are back on the ice on Saturday night for their final game before the All-Star Break when they host the Vegas Golden Knights. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET.
