The second day of New York Islanders rookie camp brought no shortage of intensity, and head coach Rocky Thompson came away impressed with the group’s pace, focus, and overall approach. While Thompson emphasized that he is not yet evaluating individual performances, his early observations reflected a strong start to camp.

“I’m more focused on making sure the practice is going good and they’re working hard,” Thompson said. “I’ve been really impressed with everybody because the practices haven’t been easy and their pace of play… I don’t go to the board a lot. So, it’s a lot of focus that they have to have in order to execute out there the way I coach, and I’m really impressed with it.”

Two players did earn early nods — Maxim Shabanov and first-overall pick Matthew Schaefer. “Outside of Shabanov, because I notice a few great plays there, and Schaefer stands out for me too — you know, his elite skill set,” Thompson explained. But overall, he stressed that rookie camp is about setting tone and structure, not drawing conclusions.

Thompson credited the foundation laid at July’s development camp for helping players arrive more confident this week. “It makes them feel better and more confident coming out here,” he said. “There’s probably a little less nerves because of that situation, which is mission accomplished.”

Mentorship extended beyond the players. Former Islander Josh Bailey has been present at camp, lending advice and perspective. “I just told him, I didn’t want to put a burden on him. I said, just things that you see, just go up and talk to the guys,” Thompson said. “It means everything when you’re a young player and somebody like that is out there helping you.”

Scrimmages and small-area games are set to follow in the coming days, providing a better window into individual evaluation. For now, Thompson is encouraged by the group’s effort and commitment. “We just want to see them work hard, execute the best that they can,” he said.

“That’s all we’re looking for right now.”
