When Peter DeBoer announced that Matthew Schaefer was lining up on the right side of the blue line this season, meaning one of the regulars among the defensive corps would be watching the press box and that player has been Scott Mayfield.
Mayfield, 34, got his opportunity after just a few games, following teh devastating news that Alexander Romanov was missing the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Mayfield played just two games before Matthew Kessell was inserted into the lineup. Kessell has played three games, and his strong play through his early tenure with the Islanders is making it difficult for DeBoer to pull him.
The rumors emerged that the Toronto Maple Leafs were interested in Mayfield, as the Leafs are looking to bolster their blue line with some size. Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News reported that the Islanders had sent a scout to the Maple Leafs' matchup with the San Jose Sharks on Monday, and that the Maple Leafs have been showing interest in Mayfield dating back to last season.
Yesterday, The Fourth Period said that while Mayfield has not requested a trade, multiple teams are showing interest, including the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, and Seattle Kraken.
Yesterday, Mayfield's agent, Matt Keator, was at UBS Arena, adding fuel to the fire, but Darche shot down any rumors today.
"I can tell you right now, there's no truth to any of those rumors. I saw them this morning," Darche said. "His agent was here the last two days because he had a player on the other team, and he has a few players on our team, so there's none of that."
Mayfield has four years remaining on his contract with an AAV of $3.5M. He has a no-trade clause this season, shifting to a 16-team NTC beginning next season.
