The New York Islanders have locked in right wing Simon Holmström, signing him to a two-year contract worth $3.5 million - a signal of confidence in the young Swede after he tallied 20 goals in his second full NHL season (75GP, 20G, 25A). That kind of production puts Holmström firmly as a contributor on the team's top-nine, and this deal reflects the organization's belief that he can take another leap forward.

Since being drafted 23rd overall in 2019, Holmström has steadily climbed the development ladder, earning his NHL debut in November 2022. After some stops and starts, he has found his way, playing a responsible two-way game that is increasingly showcasing his speed and offensive instincts.

Last season, Holmström not only scored 20 goals, but he also brought consistent energy and versatility, playing on the wing, contributing on the power play, and logging crucial minutes down the stretch. He has also shown the ability to score shorthanded, demonstrating a chemistry with JG Pageau when playing a man down. His ability to blend scoring with hustle defined him as one of the Isles’ emerging young forwards.

Still, expectations rise with investment. At his new $3.5 million cap hit, Holmström needs to replicate or even improve his scoring impact. That means staying healthy and refining his game: consistency in one-timer setups, elevated play-driving, and smarter zone entries. Islanders fans have long wondered whether the former 1st round pick had what it took to flourish at the NHL level, unlike Oliver Wahlstrom, Kieffer Bellows, and others who failed to take steps forward year after year.

The Swede has done that and now, under contract through 2027, Holmström has two seasons to cement his role. It’s a pivotal moment: build on 20 goals and step into a bigger offensive role, or risk sliding back in his development. Islanders fans will be rooting hard, as he aims to become a consistent scoring threat and long-term fixture for the team.
