The lead-up to the 2026 NHL Draft is unlike any we’ve seen in recent seasons. Teams are building their rosters, acquiring high-end talent, while others are stockpiling high draft picks.

Over the past few days, we’ve seen the Washington Capitals acquire key pieces in Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch in what was a sign-and-trade with the Buffalo Sabres. Kyrou has long been a forward that the NY Islanders have shown interest in, as recently as a few days ago. But now he’s joined one of the Isles’ division rivals.

Outside of signing players to two-way contracts, the Islanders have stood pat to this point. Mathieu Darche has been receiving pushback from fans on social media for not improving a lineup that faltered down the stretch and missed the playoffs.

The draft is scheduled for tomorrow night, which still leaves some time for the Islanders to make changes within the current makeup of the roster. We’ve seen Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway traded from Buffalo to the Chicago Blackhawks for the fourth overall pick, an early second-round pick, and 6’8” defenseman Louis Crevier. Teams are clearly paying a premium for players, which leads to the question if the Islanders are willing to move one of their current players like Adam Pelech for a high draft pick, which could be used to either add to an improving prospect pool or to package with other picks/prospects for a high-end forward.

The clock is ticking before the draft passes, and we move into free agency. The next 24 hours will likely be the best time for the Islanders to make a move and load up to compete with those who have already improved.
