It's been 73 days since the NY Islanders played their final game of the 2025-26 season, and with the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft set for tonight, it finally feels like we're on to a new season.
The Isles' season ended in disappointment, missing out on teh playoffs for a second straight season, but today is the day to improve your prospect pool and improve for the years ahead.
As of now, the Islanders will make five picks over the next two days, owning picks No. 13, 109, 141, 173, and 205. With just a few hours before the Toronto Maple Leafs take the stage to make the first selection of the night, things around the league could change drastically. As we've seen over the past few days, players and draft picks have been dealt what seems like every few hours. And like every other GM in the league, Mathieu Darche will be working the phones until the last minute to improve his team.
If the Islanders do make the pick at No. 13, they will have plenty of high-quality players to choose from. Ethan Belchetz and Viggo Bjorck are two players they could be targeting, but may be selected before the Islanders reach the podium. Ryan Lin, Wyatt Cullen, and Tynan Lawrence are more likely selections, barring their availability; all of whom will likely not start in the NHL next season but could soon make an impact on the organization.
The draft will begin at 7:00 pm tonight, but there's the possibility we could still see some fireworks across the NHL before that time.
