NY Islanders fans rejoiced last night as the Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated from Stanley Cup contention, thwarted by the Florida Panthers in seven games. After John Tavares took off from Long Island for his hometown team seven years ago, the Leafs have failed to advance past the second round, with Tavares set to be a free agent once again this summer.

Despite a stacked lineup, something has to change within the Maple Leafs organization, starting at the top.

Brendan Shanahan has been the President of the Maple Leafs since 2014, with tons of regular season success, but has been unable to get the job done in the postseason.

The Islanders are still in search of a new General Manager and potentially a President of Hockey Operations. From trusted sources around the team, it appears as if Mathieu Darche, the current Assistant GM for the Tampa Bay Lightning, is among the favorites to take over the role of GM. As a first-time GM, John Collins would likely want to bring in someone more experienced to take over the role of POHO, allowing Darche to focus more on personnel. If Shanahan is let go from his post with the Leafs, Collins may jump at the opportunity to hire Shanahan, after the two worked for years together with the NHL.

The Leafs became public enemy number one when Tavares left for nothing, and now the Islanders have the chance to repay the favor with Mitch Marner entering free agency. The long-time Maple Leaf finished this season with 102 points (27 G, 75 A), a career high.

Now, it appears as if Marner's time in Toronto is up, with Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet saying, "It's very hard to see Leafs and Marner camp seeing eye to eye on an extension unless one side changes its bargaining position."

The winger would slot in on the Isles' top line and would greatly improve the Isles' putrid power play and penalty kill.

Though he won't be suiting up this season, Matt Martin will surely remain part of the organzatiion in some capacity, and could be the head recruiter in a potential chase of Marner.

Though it's been some time since losing Tavares, the Isles faithful would love the opportunity to return the favor to their neighbors to the North.
